The Vienna Recreational and Improvement Association Board, known as VRIA, was established in 1953 by our founder Darrell B. Dotson and is a non-profit, volunteer agency, providing recreational facilities and activities for girls and boys from Vienna, North Hills, and other neighboring communities. Over 1750 youths participate in these activities each year.
VRIA receives funding from the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley to help administer its programs. The all-volunteer organization also accepts private donations from local families or businesses and also collects a small participation fee. The City of Vienna Parks and Recreation provides assistance with the maintenance of the ball fields and facilities being used by VRIA activities.
VRIA offers Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse and Indoor Floor Hockey. There is also a Saturday night adult Floor Hockey League.
Vienna Parks and Recreation now runs Football, Cheer, Softball, Baseball, Tee Ball, Tennis and Swimming.
Vienna Parks and Recreation and VRIA work together to provide these sports for youth ages three through eighteen depending on the sport. We share the name Vienna Recreation to avoid confusion because we all work together toward the same goal of providing quality youth sports to all who wish to participate.
The basketball programs offered begin with an instructional league for ages 6-8, where the emphasis is on fundamentals of the game. This league is co-ed and takes place on Saturday mornings during January and February at Neale School. VRIA offers co-ed grade school and separate divisions for both girls and boys of middle school age. Games are played at Jackson Middle School (JMS). VRIA offers a high school co-ed league with games that take place on the weekends during the winter months.
Indoor floor hockey is offered by VRIA and takes place during January and February. Co-ed teams are formed in various age groupings and games are played on Saturdays. This sport is not to be confused with roller hockey – no skates; just a pair of tennis shoes is required. Scheduling is worked out so the athletes can play two sports during the same season (Hockey, Basketball)
Vienna Recreation offers Co-Ed Spring/Summer Soccer for youths Pre-K through 8th grade. Practice begins in April and games run into June. Scheduling is worked out so the athletes can play two sports during the same season (Tee-Ball, Baseball or Softball while also playing Soccer).
Co-ed fall Soccer begins in Vienna shortly after Labor Day and runs into October each year. The leagues are for children from Pre-K through 8th grade. Matches are played on the ball fields along Rosemar Road. As the fall season approaches and the days are shorter, the lights can be utilized to extend play.
Vienna Recreation provides enjoyment, skill development, a chance to excel, greater self-esteem, socialization, better health and the development of an exercise habit that can continue throughout life. Vienna Recreation provides opportunities for families to experience these benefits together.
No child is turned away if they can not pay the sign up fee. We offer scholarships for admission to our programs for those in need. You can sign up online and we can provide a code for scholarship. Simply contact the league representative for a special code prior to going online. This funding is provided by the United Way Alliance of the Mid Ohio Valley (UWMOV).
